The maintenance of comprehension centered on the subject

The techniques exposed below are deduced from work of CARL ROGERS on the maintenance of assistance. They suppose that the adult is able to recognize his own needs and formulates demands for consequence. In this direction they make confidence with the person to solve her own problems. The method is a means of arriving to a result acceptable for any responsible adult and can make it possible a personality in construction (child or teenager) to find its own answers to situations which it could not solve without external assistance.


The relation with the person that we want to develop, at the beginning, is developed for itself. 

It requires sympathy, solidarity and co-operation. Maintenance must be a form of intercommunication where a bridge between two partners is created, which does of their two personalities "us", which generates a feeling of emotional solidarity. 

The person who proposes maintenance must offer a type of relation stripped of very prejudged and any anxiety. It is on top that will be built the co-operative action to solve the problems of the subject. 

The alive element is the dynamic relation between the people. 

The interrelationship must succeed, for the subject, with an assistance which it receives to find a better blooming. 

The relation such as it is founded represents the construction of a new environment for the subject thanks to which it more effectively seeks the solution of its problems, its solution. 

Maintenance is the means by which the subject is brought to pose its problem and by which one leads it to see there more clearly in itself.

Thus the relation which develops is specific and differs from the other kinds of human interrelationships. 

It is about : 

1) To include/understand the problem in the terms where it is posed for such singular person in her singular characteristics. 

2) To help the subject to evolve/move personally in the direction of a better adaptation to the social, psychological or economic context.


The interview technique results from this. It must not very directing and be centered on the subject. The centration on the person to understand the problem such as this one tests it supposes the following principles logically, that one can already formulate : 

a) An attitude of opened interest, i.e. an integral availability, without prejudice nor a priori of any kind, a manner of being and of making which either a continuous encouragement with the spontaneous expression of the subject. 

b) An attitude of non-directive method; i.e. that it of did not presuppose there something to seek or to check, and that the subject has the complete initiative in its presentation of the problem and its route. 

c) an attitude of not-judgement which allows all to receive, all to accomodate, without criticism nor culpabilisation outrancière of the person.

d) An intention authenticates to include/understand the interlocutor in his own language, to think in its terms, to discover its universe, 
to seize the significances that the situation has for the subject. 

e) a continuous effort to remain objective and to control throughout maintenance what it occurs. 

This ideal requires as another thing as a goodwill. It requires a formation and a method.
